Moroccan Independence:1955
Morocco was not completely independent yet; it was still controlled by the Spanish. After the French agreed to let go of Morocco, there were further negotiations for full independence in the Spanish Moroccan Agreement, which was later signed in Paris in 1956. These negotiations were made final in the Joint Declaration of April 1956. Because of these agreements with Spain Morocco controlled certain Spanish-ruled area. Morocco even tried to gain more Spanish land using military force but they did not succeed.
In the months that came after independence Mohammed V was able to build a modern government structure that was under a constitutional monarchy. This meant that the Sultan would be able to exercise an active political role. Mohamed V was careful; he did not want to add more radical elements to the nation’s nationalist movement because it would overthrow the established order. He also needed to make sure that he prevent the Istiqlal from consolidating its' control and establishing a single partied state of its own. Mohammed V became king (a title) in August of 1957.
Morocco - Week One
My excitment is growing as we get closer to the trip and become more involved in the activities for going to Morocco.
What do you think about the fundraising ideas that were generated? How can you contribute?
I would like to offer a battle of the bands idea because DY Regional high School made a lot of money from this. Plus we have a lot of people in our school who are very musical and would love to participate in this.
What talents or connections do you have that can help the group?
I do not have any connections to restruants or other stores that could lend us supplies, but I have connections to the hispital, and to the firedepartment which could be useful if we need chairs or tables that they could lend me.
What are you going to do to participate in the small group meeting when you meet on Monday or Tuesday? What is your favorite fundraising idea that you've heard?
I will offer anything that is revelant to the point we are going to discuss.

First Morocco Trip Meeting
I signed up for this trip because i live to travel, but all the places i go i have just gone sight seeing and everything was preplanned for me. I love the idea of helping people and being able to go where i want to go and plane everything out to fit what i am intrested in. Another thing that intrests me is that the CAS would be covered with this trip, so i would be doing something i really injoy and getting school work out of the way.
b. What do you hope to gain from this trip? (Personally and academically)
From this trip i hope to gain a new freedom, earning my own money to pay for a trip that will take me far away from home without my parents. Academically i hope to gain a new outlook for other peoples cultures which is something i am very intrested in and that i can take my experience from this trip and put it into my school life to make it more intresting.
c. Are you nervous, excited, anxious, etc. about traveling to a very different country & culture? Why?
I am really excited to be travling to morocco becasue its an enviroment i have never been to. I am nervous to thouogh. My dad was in Iraq last year and is being called back again, and he says that areas that are close to morocco are very dangerous. It was the big reason my parents were not going to let me go.
d. How do you plan to contribute to the group to help with fundraising?
I hope to bring good ideas to the group to raise as much money as we are able to. Some of my ideas so far have been a battle of the bands (DY did very well with this), maybe a school dance? but probally not because people have not gone to the last few. For a smaller prices we could have car washes, or have donations from business that would lend money to our case. There could be a dinner, like some people at the meeting said we could serve some Moroccan foods.
e. Do you see the year of planning, fundraising, and group activities to be a challenge? In other words, are you outside of your comfort zone, or is this something you are very comfortable about? If no, why? If yes, why?
I feel this will be a challenge but one i am looking forward to overcoming, but i am not outside of my comfort zone at all. i am perfectly comfortable with traveling outside of the country, and with raising al of my own money to go on this trip, im really happy to have the opportunity to try this out.
f. What are some personal goals you are setting for yourself?
I am hoping to gain the new sense of independence and learn to do things by myself. i feel that is something that every teenager wants to do but not in this way. By beign able to plan this trip i will be able to gain new skills, but still be overseen to make sure nothing is messed up to badly.
g. Do you have a plan to help raise money on your own? If so, what is that plan?
I have applyed for two summer jobs to try and raise my own money. I also have some odd jobs such as mowing lawns and washing cars, babysitting etc. (Camp counsler, and maybe icecream place)
h. What did you think of Wednesday's first meeting?
I ahve an appointment at the same time as the meeting, but i am hopeing to make it, or talk to someone about it afterwards so i will be clued in.
